Predicador inglés y fundador de la Sociedad de los Amigos. Hijo de un tejedor, dejó su hogar a los 18 años en búsqueda de experiencia religiosa. Comenzó probablemente como puritano (ver puritanismo), pero reaccionó incluso más enérgicamente que estos en contra de la tradición de la Iglesia de Inglaterra y llegó a considerar la experiencia personal como la verdadera fuente de autoridad, colocando a la "luz interior o inspiración recibida de Dios por encima de credos y escrituras. Recorrió la campiña a pie, predicando a pequeños grupos, y estableció congregaciones junto con otros predicadores. Los cuáqueros surgieron en la década de 1650. Las denuncias de los cuáqueros contra ministros y funcionarios públicos y su rechazo a pagar diezmos o a prestar juramento desatan su persecución y Fox fue encarcelado en ocho ocasiones entre 1649 y 1673. Realizó viajes misioneros a Irlanda, islas del Caribe, América del Norte y norte de Europa. Su Journal [Diario] ofrece un relato de su vida y el origen del cuaquerismo.
